Otto Warmbier, the Univ of VA learner who was freed from N Korean custody latest week, has died, his family confirms. He was 22.

His parents, Fred and Cindy Warmbier, said in a statement that he died surrounded by loved ones at 2:20 p. m. on Monday.

"It'd be simple at a moment love this to focus on all that we lost -- future time that won't be spent with a warm, engaging, brilliant youthful man whose curiosity and enthusiasm for life knew number bounds. But we select to focus on the time we were given to be with this remarkable person," the family said in a statement.

Warmbier was detained in January two thousand sixteen while visiting N Korea at the finish of a five-day tour. He was later sentenced to fifteen years tough labor for allegedly stealing a propaganda sign at his hotel.

He was in a coma when he was sent residence to the U. S. latest week. A spokesperson with the Univ of Cincinnati Medical Middle said he'd suffered a "severe neurological injury."

"When Otto returned to Cincinnati late on June thirteenth he was unable to speak, unable to look and unable to react to verbal commands. He looked very uncomfortable -- nearly anguished. Although we'd never hear his voice again, within a day the countenance of his face changed -- he was at peace. He was residence and we believe he could sense that," the family said.

Doctors said that brain scans sent by N Koreans in April two thousand sixteen indicated that he suffered a disastrous brain injury shortly after his conviction in March of latest year. They said he suffered "severe injuries to all areas" of his brain during his time in prison, causing "extensive loss of brain tissue in all regions of the brain."

His father, Fred Warmbier, previously said he didn't believe N Korea'south explanation that the coma resulted from botulism and a sleeping pill. He said there was number reason for N Korea to hold his son'south condition a secret and deny him top medical care.

President Trump on Monday said that he and first lady Melania Trump offered their deepest condolences to the Warmbier family. "There is nothing more tragic for a parent than to lose a baby in the prime of life. Our thoughts and prayers are with Otto'south family and friends, and all who loved him," Mr. Trump said in a statement.

"Otto'south fate deepens my Administration'south determination to prevent such tragedies from befalling innocent people at the hands of regimes that don't respect the regulation of law or basic human decency. The United States once again condemns the brutality of the N Korean regime as we mourn its latest victim," the statement said.

In Monday'south statement, the family thanked professionals at the Univ of Cincinnati Medical Center, but said the "bad torturous mistreatment" by N Koreans "ensured that number other outcome was possible" beyond their son's death.

In its first official comment since Warmbier returned home, N Korea said it'd released him for humanitarian reasons.

U. S. lawmakers responded shortly after the family confirmed the 22-year-old's death.

Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, said on Twitter that he'south praying for the Warmbier family. "The strength and like of their family continues to inspire us all," Brown tweeted.

"He'd all the talent you could ever ask for and a shining future ahead of him," Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, said in a statement.

Sen. Al Franken of MN issued a statement on Twitter. "My heart goes out to the loved ones of Otto Warmbier. Thinking of Otto'south family & friends, & wishing them strength during this tragic time," he said.
