The latest quake struck about sixty-two miles (100km) north-northwest of Portoviejo and at a depth of six miles (10km), said the US Geological Survey.

Ecuador has been hit by a magnitude six earthquake - less than a week after a size 7.8 quake killed five hundred eighty-seven people.

The latest quake struck about sixty-two miles (100km) north-northwest of Portoviejo and at a depth of six miles (10km), said the US Geological Survey.

President Rafael Correa said on Twitter that three aftershocks were registered on Thursday night.

There has been number immediate word on injuries or damage. Number tsunami warning has been issued.

It follows Saturday'south quake, the worst to hit the S American country in nearly four decades.

The official death toll from that quake has been rising, with scores of people still missing.

President Correa has estimated the damage at $2bn to $3bn. 

Dozens of foreign aid workers and experts have arrived and 14.000 security personnel have been keeping order amid fears of looting.

"There are rumours there'south a shortage of water," Mr Correa said on Wednesday, responding to complaints about the aid operation.

"We've plenty of water. The problem is distribution," he said.
