Kabul Bombing: Blast Kills twenty, Militants Storm Government Site

KABUL, Afghanistan — More than twenty people were killed and almost two hundred injured after a suicide bomb rocked the heart of Afghanistan'south capital on Tuesday, executive said.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack — which occurred exterior an office of the country'south main national security agency — and said fighters had entered the building.

Counterterrorism forces had "pinned down the terrorists" interior one of the National Directorate of Security sites, according to Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi.

Gunfire could be heard from the scene and Sediqqi said the operation was ongoing and that the militants would soon be "neutralized."

Ministry of Public Health spokesman Mohammad Ismail Kawosi said more than twenty people had been killed and at least one hundred ninety-eight injured in the attack. "We still don't have the exact no of fatalities," he added.

The blast struck close the Afghan Ministry of Defense and just a few hundred yards from the Afghan presidential palace and NATO'south local headquarters.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said in a statement that he "strongly condemns the terrorists' attack in Kabul." He said the incident "clearly shows the enemy'south beat in face-to-face battle with Afghan security forces. It'll strengthen our resolve to fight terror."

The Taliban, whose Islamist regime was toppled by the U. S.-led invasion in two thousand-first, announced a spring offensive latest week.

The militants attacked the northern city of Kunduz over the weekend, resulting in the deaths of around one hundred fighters, sixteen Afghan security forces and twelve civilians, according to the Ministry of Defense.
