Key facts about the two fatal earthquakes that struck the same area in southern Japan on successive nights:

FIRST QUAKE: A magnitude-6.5 earthquake struck at 9:26 p. m. Thursday at a depth of eleven kilometers (seven miles).

SECOND QUAKE: A magnitude-7.3 earthquake struck at 1:25 a. m. Saturday at a depth of twelve kilometers.

WHERE: Both quakes were centered close Kumamoto, a city of 740.000 people on Kyushu, the southernmost of Japan'south four main islands.

DEATHS AND INJURIES: forty-one people are reported deceased in the two quakes, and about 1.500 injured, at least one hundred eighty-four seriously.

HARDEST-HIT AREAS: Town of Mashiki, which borders the eastern edge of Kumamoto city, and Minamiaso, a rural village farther E close Mount Aso volcano.

DAMAGE: At minimum 1.000 buildings have been damaged, including ninety totally destroyed. Many roads have buckled and cracked, and enormous landslides have blocked roads and left buildings hanging precariously.

UTILITIES: About 200.000 households have number power, and 400.000 have number running water.

EVACUEES: About 90.000 people have evacuated to shelters and elsewhere.

RAIN: Rain is forecast for overnight Saturday, raising fears of more landslides.
