Back-to-back fatal earthquakes on successive nights close the city of Kumamoto in southern Japan have toppled buildings and triggered landslides.

Nearly 200.000 homes were without electricity, and drinking water systems had also failed in the area, Japanese media reported. Around 400.000 households were without running water.

A historic shrine and castle were also damaged by the magnitude-6.5 earthquake on Thursday night and the 7.3 quake early Saturday morning.
