Pope To Meet Refugees Detained In Lesbos

Pope Francis is set to come in Lesbos to look how the island is offering assistance to migrants.

The Vatican insists the visit is humanitarian and religious in nature, but it's bound to highlight the EU'south new deportation plan.

He'll visit a camp where 2.three hundred people are being detained for deportation to Turkey below an agreement between Ankara and the EU.

Francis will be joined by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, the spiritual boss of the world'south 300 million Orthodox Christians, and the head of the Orthodox Church of Greece, Athens Archbishop Ieronymos II.

Gauri van Gulik, deputy Europe director at Amnesty International, said: "The Pope'south visit comes at a pivotal moment: right as Europe is gearing up to send thousands of refugees back to Turkey, locking them up in the meantime in horrible conditions.

"These are people who fled the horrors of Islamic State, the Taliban, bombings in Syria and more. They deserve Europe'south protection and care, and hopefully the Pope can shed light on their plight."

The leaders will create an address to and eat lunch with some of the asylum seekers.

There was a tiny protest exterior the Moria detention camp on Friday, with demonstrators saying the Pope should do more.

"You can't side with the refugees and with the politicians deporting them," said hospital Dr Stathis Pavlou. "So I think the Pope'south visit will just muddy the waters.

"We should be helping these people, not locking them up."

Relief agencies have criticised conditions in the camp as "unacceptable", with "unaccompanied minors locked up behind barbed wire".

More than a million migrants entered the EU latest year, about half landing on the beaches of Lesbos.
