The Su-24s flew so near they made "a wake in the water" in what was said to be one of the most aggressive acts in recent memory.

Two Russian warplanes flew "simulated attack profiles" this week close a US guided missile destroyer in international waters off Russia, US officials say.

The apparently unarmed Russian Su-24 jets came so near to the USS Donald Cook on Tuesday they created "a wake in the water", the executive told Reuters news agency.

Russian Ka-27 helicopters were also said to have circled the US destroyer seven times, taking pictures.

A US official told AFP news agency there were several overflights on Monday and Tuesday.

In one of the incidents an Su-24 jet is said to have flown just 30ft (nine metres) over the USS Donald Cook.

"This is more aggressive than anything we've seen in some time," the official said.

The American destroyer was said to have been in the Baltic Sea, about seventy nautical miles off Kaliningrad.
