Three men were rescued from a abandoned Pacific island after a US Navy plane saw the word "help" spelled out in palm leaves on the beach.

The men'south families reported them lost on Tuesday after they didn't indicate up at the Micronesian island of Weno, US Coast Guard spokeswoman Melissa McKenzie said.

The men were heading in a skiff from another Micronesian island when a wave overtook them, she said.

"Fortunately for them, they were all wearing life jackets and were able to swim to the abandoned island," Ms McKenzie said.

The men were waving their orange life jackets when the plane spotted them on the tiny island of Fanadik on Friday, hundreds of miles N of Papua New Guinea.

Two hours later, a tiny local boat picked them up and took them to a hospital.

Ms McKenzie said on Saturday she didn't have updated information on their condition.

Two bulk carriers searched for a combined total of seventeen hours for the men as portion of AMVER, a US Coast Guard voluntary look for and rescue programme.
