UN Investigates Tanzanian Peacekeepers in Congo on Abuses

The statement late Friday said a response team has been dispatched to inquire into Mavivi village where there is initial proof of sex with minors and transactional sex, as well as paternity claims.

The United Nations mission in Congo says it's received allegations of sexual abuse by Tanzanian peacekeepers based in northeast Congo.

The statement late Friday said a response team has been dispatched to inquire into Mavivi village where there is initial proof of sex with minors and transactional sex, as well as paternity claims.

It added that Tanzanian and Congolese authorities have been informed, and if allegations are substantiated, prompt action will be taken. The alleged perpetrators have been confined to their camp.

The U. N. said it'll allow medical and psycho-social support to victims.

The U. N. has been in the spotlight for months over allegations of sexual abuses by its peacekeepers, particularly those based in Central African Republic and Congo.

The 20.000 powerful Congo peacekeeping mission began in 1999.
