The US President says if extremists ever obtained nuclear material it'd be a catastrophe that could "change our world".

US President Barack Obama has said a treaty ratified by one hundred two nations will assistance foil any plots by extremists to get nuclear material.

"Working together, our nations have made it harder for terrorists to obtain their hands on nuclear material," he told the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington.

Mister Obama said the expanded Conference on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material would be effective soon.

More than fifty world leaders have gathered in WA DC over the past two days to discuss how to hold terrorists from gathering materials for a so-called filthy bomb, and other nuclear threats.

On Friday, Mister Obama said the world has "measurably reduced" the risk from nuclear weapons.

But he warned there is a persistent and evolving threat of terrorists conducting a nuclear attack.

He mentioned proof that extremists linked to the Paris and Brussels attacks had filmed a senior manager at a Belgian nuclear facility.

"ISIL has already used chemical weapons - there is number doubt if these madmen ever got their hands on a bomb or nuclear material they'd utilize it to murder as many as possible," Mister Obama told world leaders.

He says that'd be a catastrophe that could "modify our world."
