A VA state trooper was killed and two civilians wounded after a gunman opened fire at a active bus terminal, police have said.

Trooper Chad Dermyer died after being shot repeatedly at the Greyhound bus Sta in Richmond on Thursday.

The 37-year-old father-of-two had been taking portion in a training exercise at the Sta with around a dozen other troopers when an encounter with the gunman turned violent.

VA State Police Superintendent Colonel Steven Flaherty said Trooper Dermyer was dressed in a fatigue-style uniform and wasn't wearing a protective vest.

Two women were wounded in the shooting, but they injuries weren't life-threatening, according to State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

The gunman, who was shot deceased by two other troopers, hasn't been identified as his family hasn't been notified.

Dozens of officers in tactical gear flooded the Sta after the shooting, which took space in an area near to a minor league baseball stadium and a no of restaurants.

Najee Wilson, eighteen, of Newark, New Jersey, said his bus was pulling up to the Sta when he heard three gunshots and saw people running for cover.

He said: "We heard a lot of people screaming. It definitely was a scary experience."

Reva Trammell, a city councilwoman, described it as "the saddest day in the city of Richmond".

She said: "State troopers doing their work and innocent people shot. Why? This is a senseless act."

Richmond Police Dept Chief Alfred Durham said: "It'south unfortunate these are the days we're living in, where folks wish to damage law enforcement.

"We just wish our officers to finish their shifts and to go residence to their families."

Greyhound issued a statement on Thursday saying the Richmond bus Sta would be closed "until further notice".

Originally from Jackson, Michigan,Trooper Dermyer was a former Marine.
