For the first time this season, Nationals wunderkind Bryce Harper was given a day off Sunday. He didn't start the series finale against the Twins, yet he was still able to have an impact.

With his team down a run, manager Dusty Baker turned to Harper to pinch-hit leading off the ninth inning. The result? A game-tying solo residence running to deceased center. To the action footage:

Harper leads all of baseball with nine residence runs and twenty-three RBI at the moment. Matt den Dekker, who started in right field in Harper'south place, went 2-for-6 with a residence running of his own.

I've seen a few folks ponder why the Twins didn't walk Harper a la Barry Bonds, and while I realize the temptation, you can't do that leading off the inning. As grand as he is, Harper is still going to create an out roughly sixty % of the time. You can't intentionally walk the tying running on base leading off the inning. No way.

By the way, Harper didn't stay in the game after the pinch-hit residence run. Chris Heisey took over in right. Not a horrible day at the office, eh? Obtain a full day to rest aside from hitting the game-tying homer in the ninth.
