Grades: Charley Hoffman exorcises Sun demons, wins TX Open

Charley Hoffman had a problem coming into this week. He was ranked No. two hundred on the PGA Tour in fourth-round scoring. His scoring average of 74.8 was only better than Justin Hicks at 77.0 (but Hicks had played only three final rounds this season&#forty-one;. Hoffman'south was the worst of those who'd played eight rounds or more by a whole stroke.

Needless to say, there wasn't a ton of confidence in Hoffman as he entered Sun two back of the lead with a ton of guys piled up together behind Ricky Barnes.

So what did Hoffman do? Oh, just dropped a sixty-nine with three birdies in the latest eight holes, including a clutch one at the seventy-second hole to stay out of a playoff with Patrick Reed.

Winning putt. Winning reaction.

Congratulations Charley Hoffman on claiming the Valero TX Open!https://t. co/kLiO5pCT1q

The triumph is Hoffman'south fourth on the PGA Tour in his career and first since two thousand fourteen. Hoffman hasn't finished exterior the top twenty at this tournament since two thousand ten, so you knew he'd play well. But he closed love a boss.

Hoffman was beautiful emotional after the victory. He'd clearly heard the murmurs about his Sun scoring average. Hoffman has contended at several tournaments this year (including latest week'south RBC Heritage&#forty-one;, but Sun blowups left him searching.

"This latest mo was hard," Hoffman told CBS' Dottie Pepper. "Being in contention every Sun and not closing the door ... it'south not me."

Here are our grades for the TX Open.

Bryson DeChambeau: DeChambeau missed the slice for his first time as a pro (OK, in his second start&#forty-one;. DeChambeau warned us going into the week that his body was fading after an intense couple of weeks. It was the very thing he cited in an Instagram post after he missed the weekend by three strokes.

"What a few weeks it's been!" wrote DeChambeau. "Even though my body slowed down a bit this week, I'd a grand time at the TX Open, and I hope to be back following year!" Grade: F

Phil Mickelson: Mickelson has regressed mightily in the past mo after a tremendous start to the 2015-16 season. He missed the slice at the Masters and followed it by another missed slice in San Antonio.

"I don't perceive horrible about the physical game, the ball coming off the blade," Mickelson told Golf Channel. "The swing is on plane. I necessity better mental focusing, seeing the shot before I step into it." It'south beautiful much always mental with Lefty. Grade: F

Billy Horschel: My favorite moments of Horschel'south weekend were the fist bump he offered up to winner Hoffman after a big-boy par putt on the sixteenth hole on Sun to hold the lead, then the enormous hug on No. eighteen. Those two were paired with Reed, whom Horschel was bumping, too. Grand stuff from three pros.

Oh yeah, Horschel finished top ten in the field in strokes gained putting. If he keeps doing that, the wins will flow. Grade: A-

Patrick Reed: Who cares that he lost by one. Going for it on the par-5 finishing hole with an iron, clearing the hazard by a ft and nearly chipping in for eagle was the moment of Patrick Reed'south year so far.
