Corridor of Famer Russell Baze, the winningest jockey in N America, will miss three to four weeks after breaking his collarbone Saturday in a fall at Golden Gate Fields, according to Ray Harris, Baze’s agent.

Baze, fifty-seven, fractured his right collarbone when he was unseated by his mount, favorite Hewearsthefoxhat, in Saturday’s third race, a six-furlong sprint for $25.000 maiden claimers. The 3-year-old colt, trained by Steve Sherman, broke down during the stretch running and was euthanized.

Baze walked off the track, but x-rays at Oakland’s Highland Hospital revealed the fracture.

Baze, who's 12.812 career wins and fifty-three Golden Gate riding titles, leads the current meet’s jockey standings with ninety-five victories, twenty-nine more than second-place rider Juan Hernandez.

In other Northern CA horse racing news, undefeated filly Songbird will miss the upcoming KY Oaks, trainer Jerry Hollenderfor said. Songbird, an overwhelming favorite for the Oaks, has a low-grade fever and missed several days of training. Songbird has won all seven starts, including the Santa Anita Oaks on April 9.
