The River Cats took the field for their residence opener on Friday night with a touch of sadness in the Raley Field air.

Their manager, Jose Alguacil, had to fly back to his native Venezuela beforehand as a result of the death of his father, Jesus Alguacil.

Number details were available at game time on the death of the father of the River Cats’ 43-year-old manager, who was born in Caracas.

Hitting coach Damon Minor will running the team until Alguacil returns next week.

The River Cats took a 2-6 record into the game against the Salt Lake Bees, the Triple-A affiliate of the LA Angels. Sacramento opened the season by getting swept by the Bees in four games in Salt Lake City before splitting a four-game series in Las Vegas.

Earlier Friday, the River Cats announced that they'd sent their first player of the year to the big club.

Relief pitcher Derek Law departed in the morning for LA to connect the Giants for their series against the Dodgers.

Law, twenty-five, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound right-hander, got the call to replace Sergio Romo in the San Francisco bullpen. Romo went on the disabled list Wednesday with a flexor strain in his right elbow. It’s the same injury that caused Matt Cain a season’s worth of grief latest year for the Giants.

In three relief appearances for the River Cats this year, Law has pitched three innings without giving up a run. He's struck out two, walked one and allowed one hit.

Not counting rehabilitation assignees from San Francisco, about twenty-five River Cats reached the majors latest season. A few went up and down and back up again.
