Josh Pastner: Helper coaches who golf 'can't work for me'

Newly hired GA Tech coach Josh Pastner expects his helper coaches to commit themselves to rebuilding the Yellow Jackets into a national power -- and that means they won't have time to golf.

Pastner, when asked recently about hiring helper coaches, said that any potential candidate who likes to golf frequently "can't work for me."

"My first question to anyone I [might] hire is, 'Do you golf?'" Pastner told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "If they say, 'Yes,' you can't work for me, because that means five hours on a Sun or on a Saturday. Can't. Don't wish it. That'south for my helper coaches. Any of my helper coaches, if they're golfers, not working for me."

Pastner was hired by GA Tech latest week after spending the past seven seasons at Memphis, where he replaced John Calipari.

The 38-year-old Pastner told the Journal-Constitution that he's "always been a driven guy" and acknowledged that his demanding approach is "not always the best way to be at times."

Pastner attempted to make clear his no-golf policy to CBS Sports, saying "I like golf" but also reiterating the time commitment that he'll demand from his assistants.

"I'm going to be really meticulous, really get my time," he told CBS Sports. "None of my assistants can be golfers. If any of my assistants are golfers, won't fly with me.

"It'south not as much is that it'south golf. It'south that, if you're going to be here, you're going to have to work love crazy. We're rebuilding. It'south going to be a seven-day-a-week job."

GA Tech went 21-15, including 8-10 in ACC play, this past season below Brian Gregory, who was fired latest mo after five seasons at the school. The Yellow Jackets haven't reached the NCAA tournament since 2010.
