US President Lands In London And Sparks EU Row

Barack Obama has arrived in London and immediately triggered a furious political row by urging the UK to stay in the European Union.

In a move that'll enrage Tory Eurosceptics but delight pro-EU MPs and campaigners, the President says the EU makes Britain even greater.

Writing in The Daily Telegraph, Mister Obama said the sacrifice of his country'south soldiers during the Second World War means America has a stake in the referendum debate.

His column read: "Our special relationship was forged as we spilled blood together on the battlefield. From the ashes of war, those who came before us had the foresight to create the international institutions and initiatives to sustain a prosperous peace: the United Nations and NATO; Bretton Woods, the Marshall Plan, and the European Union."

And making his controversial plea, the President said: "The European Union doesn't moderate British influence - it magnifies it. A powerful Europe isn't a threat to Britain'south global leadership; it enhances Britain'south global leadership.

"The United States sees how your powerful voice in Europe ensures that Europe takes a powerful stance in the world, and keeps the EU open, outward looking, and closely linked to its allies on the other side of the Atlantic. So the US and the world necessity your outsized influence to continue - including within Europe."

But the President is already facing a furious backlash from senior Tory Eurosceptics.

Writing in the Sun, Boris Johnson said of his intervention: "It's incoherent. It's inconsistent, and yes it's downright hypocritical."

The President will have lunch at Windsor Castle to tag the Queen's ninetieth birthday and attend a dinner hosted by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Mister Obama and David Cameron are also going to discuss bilateral efforts to "root out terrorism around the world".

According to Downing Street, countering the terrorist threat from Islamic State is set to dominate the agenda when David Cameron and Mister Obama meet for talks.

The upcoming referendum on twenty-third June will also be discussed, Number ten confirmed.

Former cabinet minister and Leave campaigner Iain Duncan Smith claimed Mister Obama was only visiting "because the Prime Minister has gone on bended knee and said 'Arrive over and assistance us bully the British people into making a decision'."

He also accused the President of double standards, as Mister Duncan Smith "can imagine number circumstances below which he'd lobby for the US Supreme Ct to be bound by the judgments of a foreign court".

Mister Johnson says it's a "breathtaking example of the principle of do as I declare but not as I do".

In his newspaper column, he added: "The Americans would never contemplate anything love the EU, for themselves or for their neighbours in their own hemisphere. Why should they think it right for us?"

But Alan Johnson, chairman of Labour In for Britain, said the President'south remarks showed it's "number longer credible" to claim the UK could've a closer relationship with the US exterior of the EU.

He said: "President Obama is Head of State in a country that's been Britain'south ally in war and in peace. US soldiers lost their lives in two world wars on our continent.

"Not only does this give the President an entitlement to comment, I believe he's an obligation to point out the wider ramifications of a British withdrawal from the EU."
