The Foreign Secretary says Britain is willing to send training and support personnel but has "no plans" to deploy combat troops.

Britain has number plans to send combat troops to Libya, the Foreign Secretary has said.

Philip Hammond made the comments to the House of Commons following media speculation that British special forces were already operating in the country.

"I'm clear that there is number appetite in Libya for foreign combat troops on the ground," said Mister Hammond, who's just returned from a visit to the country.

A newly established Government of National Agreement (GNA) is presently in power in Tripoli.

"We don't foresee any requests from the GNA for ground combat forces to get on Daesh (Islamic State) or any other armed groups and we've number plans to deploy troops in such a role," Mister Hammond added.  

"I'll of course hold the House informed of any plans we expand in the future in response to requests from the Libyan government.

"But the type of mission that we currently envisage would be focused on providing training and technical support far from any frontline operations."

Mister Hammond'south visit to Libya was a indicate of support for prime minister-designate Fayez Sarraj and his new administration.

Speculation has been growing that as many as 1.000 British troops may be asked to get portion in an international force in the country.

The shadow foreign secretary, Hilary Benn, said Labour backed a UN resolution which recognises that member states should allow support to the new Libyan administration as requested.

He said he welcomed the establishment of the Libyan Government of National Accord.

"As the Foreign Secretary says, it faces a formidable task in ensuring security, restoring public services, building up the economy and tackling the threat from Daesh," Mister Benn said.
