Thousands Connect Anti-Austerity March In London

Tens of thousands of demonstrators have gathered in central London for a national protest against the Government's austerity measures.

The march began at the Univ of Central London before continuing through the streets for a rally in Trafalgar Square.

Protesters carried banners including one which read "Cameron Should Go - Tories Out!" as union leaders and politicians addressed the crowd.

The demonstrators demanded action on a wide range of issues including health, housing, jobs and education.

Labour'south shadow chancellor John McDonnell told the protesters: "As a Labour government, when we obtain into power we'll end austerity.

"We'll halt the privatisation of our NHS and create it public once again.

"And for all those people desperately waiting for a home - I can give this promise: We'll construct the hundreds of thousands of council homes that'll end homelessness."

The protesters called for the resignation of Prime Minister David Cameron in the wake of the Panama Papers leaks.

Unite union common secretary Len McCluskey said: "The establishment shames our democracy.

"It's up to all of us to work together and send a clear message - that we'll fight, fight, fight for a better tomorrow."

In a video message played at the rally, Labour boss Jeremy Corbyn said: "The austerity we're in is a political choice, not an economic necessity."

Unions and groups attending the march and rally included the National Union of Teachers, Stop the War Coalition, the National Union of Students and the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament.
