More than one hundred fifty years after his death, Palmerston has returned to the Foreign Office … to assistance hold rats, mice and other pests at bay.

A moggy named after the former prime minister and foreign secretary has taken up residence in the Government dept with the title of "chief mouser".

He'll live just yards distant from Larry, David Cameron'south cat in Downing Street.

Love Larry, Palmerston comes from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home. He arrived there in March as a neglected stray.

Palmerston, a two-year-old domestic brief hair, was found wandering around the streets of London underweight, hungry and with no microchip.

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokeswoman said: "Palmerston is HM Diplomatic Service'south newest arrival and in the role of FCO chief mouser will assist our pest controllers in keeping down the no of mice in our King Charles Street building.

"Palmerston'south domestic posting will have zero cost to the public purse as a staff kitty will be used to pay for him and all aspects of his welfare.

"We've worked closely with Battersea Dogs and Cats Residence on Palmerston'south deployment and they've inspected his new home, as they do for all potential new owners of their rescue cats."

Battersea'south Head of Catteries, Lindsey Quinlan said: "Palmerston will have number problems making friends and foes in the Foreign Office. He'south a very confident cat, loves being with people, and enjoys a excellent chin rub.

"But nothing escapes the attention of this Battersea moggy and we know he'll have an eagle eye out for unwanted visitors, whiskers twitching and prepared to pounce at the right moment, to hold his new residence free of rodent interlopers."

When he's not stalking the corridors of power, Palmerston will reside in the office of Sir Simon McDonald, FCO Permanent Under-Secretary.

He'll also have access to most offices and official rooms and will be looked after by staff.

Mister McDonald said: "I hope that Palmerston'south impact will be as considerable as his namesake's."

Henry John Temple, the third Viscount Palmerston, was prime minister twice and was known for his assertive approach to foreign policy.

In the past, Larry has had to contend with was far from Palmerstonian.

It's hoped Palmerston will obtain on better than Chancellor George Osborne's cat, Freya, who moved into eleven Downing Str in 2010.

She went lost in May two thousand fourteen, eventually turning up lost and frightened in Vauxhall a mile-and-a-half away. Freya was taken to a vet three months later when she was knocked down by a car.
