Turner Chosen As Face Of New £20 Banknote

Artist JMW Turner has been chosen as the face of the new £20 banknote to be issued by 2020.

The design will comprise a one thousand seven hundred ninety-nine self-portrait of Turner alongside one of his most well-known works, The Fighting Temeraire – which in two thousand-fifth was voted Britain'south favourite painting.

It'll be printed on polymer – as will the following £5 and £10 notes. Turner replaces economist Adam Smith who's been on the £20 note since 2007.

The choice of the artist was announced at the Turner Contemporary art gallery in Margate – a town the artist frequently visited – following a public consultation which saw 29.701 nominations for five hundred ninety eligible figures from the field of visual arts.

An advisory committee and focus groups produced a shortlist before a final decision by Bank of England Gov Mark Carney.

The Gov said: "Turner is maybe the single most influential British artist of all time. His work was transformative, bridging the classical and modern worlds. His influence spanned his lifetime and is still apparent today."

Artist Tracey Emin said: "It'south so incredible that an artist has been chosen for the £20 note and an artist who was a wild maverick."

Turner'south The Fighting Temeraire depicts the HMS Temeraire being towed far in the sunset on its latest journey before being broken up, more than three decades after it'd played a distinguished role in Nelson’s triumph at Trafalgar in 1805.

The one thousand eight hundred thirty-nine painting was one of many works he bequeathed to the nation.

Turner'south innovative fashion was acknowledged as an necessary influence on later generations of artists. He's also commemorated through art'south Turner Prize. Turner was played by Timothy Spall in the two thousand fourteen film biopic, Mr Turner.
