The campaign group, backed by Michael Gove and Boris Johnson, will presently be able to spend up to £7m in the run-up to the referendum.

Vote Leave Designated Official Anti-EU Campaign

Vote Leave has been designated as the lead campaign for the UK to leave the European Union in the upcoming referendum.

The decision by the Electoral Commission comes after a lengthy struggle with the Grassroots Out campaign supported by UKIP boss Nigel Farage and prominent Conservative backbenchers love Peter Bone and Labour'south Kate Hoey.

Claire Bassett, chief executive of the Electoral Commission, said: "We received two high quality applications on the 'Leave' side, from 'Vote Leave Ltd' and 'The Go Movement Ltd'.

"After concerned consideration, the Commission decided that 'Vote Leave Ltd' better demonstrated that it's the structures in space to ensure the views of other campaigners are represented in the delivery of its campaign.

"It therefore represents, to a greater extent than 'Go Movement Ltd', those campaigning for the 'Leave' outcome, which is the test we must apply."

The designation means Vote Leave will obtain permission to spend up to £7m on the twenty-three June referendum, compared to just £700.000 for other registered campaign groups, and gives them access to a grant of up to £600.000, free mailshots and guaranteed TV broadcasts.

The cross-party Britain Stronger in Europe group - which has the registered title The In Campaign Ltd - was the only applicant for designation as the lead campaign on the Stay side, which it's been granted.

In the aftermath of the decision, both sides of the Leave camp moved to restore bridges after in-fighting within the Eurosceptic movement which some backers fear could damage the case for Brexit.

A Vote Leave spokesman said the grouping was prepared to "work constructively" with other supporters of a Leave vote, while Mister Bone said Grassroots Out wanted to assistance create "a united front".

But Leave. EU, one of the Brexit campaign groups that's an offshoot of Grassroots Out, said it was taking valid advice with a view to mounting a Ct challenge against the decision.

Ms Bassett has told Sky News a judicial review is theoretically possible, but a modify in the date of the referendum is unlikely.

Prime Minister David Cameron, who's backing a vote to stay in the EU, welcomed the designation of Britain Stronger in Europe.

He wrote on Twitter: "Congratulations to @StrongerIn who have been designated as the Stay campaign in the EU referendum. We're stronger, safer and better off in."
