More Post Offices Set To Move Into WHSmith

Dozens of branches will transfer to the retailer to add to the one hundred seven that are already housed in its stores, below a new agreement.

The Post Office is to move up to sixty-one more branches into WHSmith stores over the following year as portion of a new 10-year agreement to relocate sites to the retailer.

There have already been one hundred seven transferred to WHSmith over the past decade.

Post Office chief executive Paula Vennells said it'd assistance safe the presence of branches on the high street, as well as bringing new investment into the network.

However, the Communication Workers Union (CWU) said it was a "kick in the teeth" for Post Office workers.

The announcement covers so-called Crown offices that are directly running by the Post Office.

Roger Gale, common manager of the Crown department network, said: "The vast majority of the Post Office'south network of eleven.500 Post Office branches is already running on a franchise or agency basis."

"Crown branches are still running by directly by the Post Office but factors such as high property costs and changing customer habits imply we've to consider new ways to allow our services in some locations."

The agreement was announced as WHSmith reported an 11 percent rise in pre-tax profits to £80m for the six months to the finish of February.

Stationery and book sales were boosted by the craze for colouring-in and action books for adults.

Overall same-store sales rose two percent with a five percent expand at travel stores - based largely at airports and railway stations – and a flat performance for WHSmith'south high street network.
