Google&#thirty-nine;s Minion April Fools' Joke Backfires

Google has said it's "truly sorry" after an April Fools&#thirty-nine; joke function it added to Gmail provoked a furious backlash from users.

The look for giant uploaded a new button to emails on Friday morning which allowed users to send recipients an animated GIF of a Minion dropping a microphone and walking away.

But mad Gmail users said they'd inadvertently hit the new 'Mic Drop' send feature, which was right following to the standard send button.

Some complained the messages had gone to their boss, colleagues, clients or prospective employers.

"Have your engineers murder themselves," wrote one forum user. "I sent that nonsense to a boss.

"You've any idea how embarrassing that is?"

One commenter said the function had cost them a job.

"I've been interviewing with this company for three months presently and mistakenly sent the email directly to guess who? The HR!

"Why'd you do that? I so wish this job; was due to start on Monday!"

Making matters worse, the joke function meant that people who sent the 'Mic Drop' email wouldn't look any replies from the recipient.

Google had explained via its blog: "Yes, even if folks attempt to respond, you won't see it."

Others complained they didn't look necessary messages sent in reply to their accidental 'Mic Drop' emails.

One Gmail forum user wrote: "I can't afford for you clowns to mess around with my business."

Within hours, Google removed the feature citing a "bug".

Google software engineer Victor-bogdan Anchidin wrote: "Well, it looks love we pranked ourselves this year.

"Due to a bug, the Mic Drop feature inadvertently caused more headaches than laughs. We're truly sorry."
