The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution was born out of necessity in one thousand nine hundred ninety-second, getting all of Mitsubishi’s high-tech rally-bred goodies developed for the heavier Galant to compete with Subaru on harsh rally stages. Of course, the car that was bred to leap over hills and sprint following to trees on dirt didn’t arrive to America until two thousand three with the introduction of the slightly watered-down Lancer Evolution VIII.

For seven generations prior to that, Mitsubishi’s four-door sedan could be easily picked out from its econobox brethren thanks to a massive wing and rally-light sized fog lamps. Below the hood, the Lancer Evo sported Mitsu’s high-performance workhorse, the 4G63T -- that is, until the Lancer Evo’s tenth installment, where the 4G63T was replaced with a similarly sized 2.0-liter turbocharged I4. That engine was called the 4B11T and was below the hood of the latest Lancer Evo to roll off the gathering line in 2016.

For twenty-four years, Mitsubishi’s Lancer Evolution surprised muscle cars on the Str and became a legend off-road. The Evo is also favorite among drag racers because of the 4G63’s strength, relative ease of modification and the car's stout all-wheel-drive system. With Mitsubishi’s Tokyo motor indicate announcement of an e-Evolution, there might be hope for an all-electric evolution hitting the Str someday but we’re not going to keep our collective breath.
