NASCAR Xfinity Series: Breaking down the new-look Dash four Cash, heat races for Bristol

Crashing in a heat race could imply lost the main

The NASCAR Xfinity Series Dash four Cash will create its first appearance of the season on Saturday at Bristol Motor Speedway and will feature heat races for the first time in program history.

The format, designed to space an emphasis on Xfinity Series regulars, will work differently this year and will play a prominent role in eligibility for the Chase for the Championship. A pair of brief heats will set the field for the main, while also determining which drivers are eligible for the bonus.

Here's a fast rundown of how the Dash four Cash will work this season.

There are four Dash four Cash races this season. They'll get space at Bristol and Richmond in April, Dover in May and Indianapolis in July. For Bristol, a pair of 50-lap heat races will serve as the lead-in to the 200-lap main event.

The top-two finishing NASCAR Xfinity Series championship eligible drivers in each heat will create up the Dash four Cash field in the main. Those drivers will carry a ruddy windshield header to signify their eligibility. The highest finisher in the main among the four eligible drivers will win the Dash four Cash and a $100.000 prize.

Should a driver win the first three Dash four Cash prizes and the Indianapolis race outright, that driver will earn an additional $600.000.

But the format also has playoff implications …

If a driver earns two Dash four Cash "wins" over the four Dash four Cash races, that's equivalent to a regular-season race win (without the race win bonus points) for Xfinity Series playoff eligibility. In other words, an Xfinity regular could earn his way into the playoffs without a main win, as long as he "wins" the Dash four Cash bonus in two of the four program events.

Italicized drivers are ineligible for points in the Xfinity Series, and thus, ineligible for the Dash four Cash bonus. With forty-one drivers on the entry list, one will be sent residence after qualifying.
