TX driver dies from neck wound caused by recalled airbag inflator

Another death has been linked to recalled Takata airbags. Late latest mo a 17-year-old driver of a two thousand two Honda Civic died from an injury caused by the deployment of an airbag during a rear-end collision.

The victim drove into the back of a Honda CR-V that was waiting to create a left-hand turn at a traffic light, which triggered the airbags, Reuters reports. The police said that the driver of the two thousand two Honda Civic hadn't been speeding excessively and that the crash itself caused only moderate damage to her car. The driver was also wearing her seat belt.

According to Fort Bend County Sheriff's Deputy Danny Beckwith, shrapnel punctured the airbag and slice the woman's neck and carotid artery. The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Honda issued a statement on the latest fatality.

"During an inspection today, accompanied by representatives of the National Hwy Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Sherriff’s Dept of Fort Bend County, Texas, and Takata, American Honda confirmed that the Takata driver’s airbag inflator ruptured in the crash of a two thousand two Honda Civic on March thirty-one, two thousand sixteen, in Fort Bend County, Texas, resulting in the tragic death of the driver. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family of the driver during this difficult time."

In recent months the automaker has drastically increased efforts to dispose and contact owners of affected vehicles to prevent injuries and deaths from faulty airbags.

"American Honda continues to urge owners of Honda and Acura vehicles affected by the Takata airbag inflator recalls to obtain their vehicles repaired at authorized dealers as soon as possible. Vehicle owners can check their vehicles’ recall status at www. recalls. honda. com for Honda owners or or www. recalls. acura. com for Acura owners or by calling their authorized dealer."

The automaker also states it currently has sufficient replacement inflators to complete the required repairs for affected vehicles, with the exception of the recall announced on Feb. three of this year. Honda is still waiting to get inflators for the latest recall from an alternative supplier but expects to have them in the following several days.

Latest mo's fatality brought the total no of U. S. deaths linked to Takata airbags to ten. In December of two thousand fifteen the driver of a two thousand six Ford Ranger pickup in SC suffered a lethal injury when a metal piece from an inflator canister punctured his neck during a collision with a cow in the road.
