Once I'd the Trailblazer engine and SC400 suspension, the goal was to slice their cost to zero

As we saw in earlier chapters of the tale of the conversion of a one thousand nine hundred forty-one Plymouth Special Deluxe sedan into a street-legal road-race car, the 4.2-liter DOHC straight-six engine intended for the 'forty-one came from a rollover-victim ex-government two thousand eight Chevrolet Trailblazer SUV, while the suspension, brake components, and rear axle gathering were extracted from a one thousand nine hundred ninety-two Lexus SC400. Once the Plymouth'south frame was separated from its body and started to get the appropriate modifications, the now-gutted donor vehicles needed to go, preferably in a profitable manner. Here'south how that process went.

Because I wanted to create the point that it'south possible to create most donor cars free if you sell off parts, a lesson that's very relevant to the racers whose car values I judge in the twenty-four Hours of LeMons race series, I was willing to sell off more than just the half-dozen most profitable components from the suspension-donor Lexus SC400. The large and hard-to-ship stuff went up on Craigslist, while the rest of the Lexus bits were offered for sale on eBay.

I paid $1.000 for a running, high-mile 'ninety-two SC400, and my net for parts sold on eBay (minus eBay and PayPal fees) came to $836.04. The most profitable item was the optional Nakamichi amplifier, which fetched $217.03; I got $100.99 for the engine ECU and $80.00 for the transmission bellhousing. But I wasn't done with parts sales yet.

Body parts, radiator, glass, and other hassle-to-ship components went up on Denver Craigslist. After the inevitable parade of buyers who didn't indicate up, buyers who showed up at 4:00 AM a week late, buyers who wanted to pay in not-so-fungible and/or not-so-valuable trades, Craigslist SC400 parts sales yielded one hundred eighty-six more bucks.

The cost of the scarce metals interior catalytic converters reached outlandish levels a couple of years ago, and so these three cats from the Lexus earned $145.

The shell of the SC400 went off to the scrapper, at a time when scrap cars were excellent for $250/ton (these days that figure is down to $50— or worse— per ton), bringing $225.60. Separating copper wire and aluminum parts brought another $12.40. The details are covered more fully here, but the cut-to-the-chase grand total came to $1.430.62 in income from selling off parts from a suspension-donor car that cost $1.000, which meant a kind 0.62 in profit plus complete front and rear suspension subframes for my project.

As for the Chevy Trailblazer engine donor, a similar eBay/Craigslist/scrapper process took place. The initial cost of the Trailblazer was $1.604, and I'm just about precisely at the break-even point now, after sales of fenders, wheels, interior and trim parts, and anything else not destroyed in the truck'south career-ending crash or squirreled far for utilize in the Plymouth. The Trailblazer'south transmission is a high-buck, high-demand item, but finding a buyer who can exchange US currency for it's been challenging; once that happens, the 'forty-one Plymouth'south new engine will be hundreds of dollars better than free.

The car handles distant better than this former rental-car should -- firm and fairly flat, and a lot better than Malibus of the past. While it could be too harsh for some, I thought the suspension a excellent compromise of stiffness and comfort.
